Designwell’s Sustainable Fit Out for Fonterra: A Masterclass in Celebrating Local Culture and Reducing Carbon Footprint.

When it comes to balancing sustainability, regional identity, and stunning design, Designwell's (in partnership with Chow:Hill Architects) Fonterra Southbloc fit out is a standout example. 🌱

This project doesn’t just push the boundaries of architectural design but also redefines how we approach commercial interiors with sustainable materials.

Fonterra Southbloc is more than just an office space; it’s a tribute to the Waikato region, seamlessly blending its rich heritage with contemporary sustainability goals. At the core of this project is both Fonterra and Designwell's commitment to reducing environmental impact, making use of locally sourced materials and innovative recycled plastic panels like Critical.’s Cleanstone.

And sustainability isn't just a buzzword here—it’s embedded into the very structure of the fit out. By integrating Cleanstone panels, made from 100% recycled plastics like fishing nets and soft plastics, this project helped to divert over a tonne of waste from landfills and significantly lowered the carbon footprint. 🌍

Here's what I believe why this project is so special. Their ability to combine sustainability with local culture is a blueprint for future projects. Imagine creating spaces that reflect the beauty of your local environment while using fit out materials that actively contribute to a circular economy. It’s a win-win for all brands and the planet.

Here are my 3 practical takeaways you can incorporate these sustainable practices into your next projects:

Use local and circular materials: Ensure the materials you choose have an end of life solution and is made from recycled materials. Think about countertops, shelving, or wall cladding, recycled plastic panels like Cleanstone are durable, visually stunning, and can help avoid 1000x the carbon emissions compared to traditional materials.

Celebrate Local Culture: Take a page from Designwell’s book and incorporate regionally-inspired design elements. This not only strengthens your brand’s connection to the community but also creates a deeper narrative for your space.

Reuse over build new: Like this project, reuse existing layouts! Sustainable materials should be paired with designs that reduce the need for future renovations, further minimising environmental impact.

I'm learning that the future of interior design is one where sustainable materials and regional identity work hand in hand.đź’ˇ
