🌍 The decisions we make today about the materials we use, the energy we conserve, and the waste we eliminate will have a profound impact on generations to come. WATCH VIDEO
So what kind of world will we leave behind for our next generation?
The move toward sustainable building practices isn't a trend but our responsibility. A recent report by the World Green Building Council revealed that buildings account for nearly 39% of global carbon emissions. But the good news is adopting sustainable design now can reduce those emissions by up to 70% over the next few decades.
And this begins by imagining the world our tamariki will inherit—a world with cleaner air, reduced waste, and cities designed with nature in mind. That future starts with the choices we make today.
Which is why projects like Designwell's HIKO hub (Hiko reo for lightning/ giving energy) fitout in The University of Waikato is another sexy example of how sustainable materials like Critical. Cleanstone combined with thoughtful and sustainable design can enhance exciting work spaces.
Alexander used the Forest Cleanstone as the feature counter top flanked with translucent Clear Cleanstone panels behind orange steel mesh screens to divide the kitchen space from the work spaces while allowing light through.
And with these selected Cleanstone panels helping to avoid over 1000 times the carbon emissions and made from 100% recycled soft plastics, fishing nets and commercial packaging... it also enhances the sustainability kaupapa for this project.
So as designers how can you lead and be a part of this shift towards circularity in your next projects? Here are 3 simple tips.
Use Sustainable Materials: Materials that are renewable, recycled, or have a low carbon footprint will define the future of green buildings.
Design for Durability: Create timeless designs that minimise the need for frequent renovations and reduce waste over time.
Embrace the Circular Economy: Products and materials designed to be reused or recycled help close the loop and create lasting environmental benefits.
Be the change we want to see in the world. Every design decision we make today is a step toward a more sustainable tomorrow. Let’s keep pushing boundaries, designing sustainably, and creating spaces that stand the test of time.
