Schools, we need to talk about classroom tables.
I caught up with the property manager at James Cook High School to kōrero about the lifecycle of school desks.
💡 On paper, school desks are designed to last over 10 years. The reality for some schools is that due to usage, he’s seen degradation happen in just 4 years. And we all know why:
❌ Laminate chips.
❌ Edges peel off, exposing MDF.
❌ Moisture gets in, swelling and rotting the surface.
❌ They can end up looking rough way before their time.
💰 So what happens next? More repairs. More replacements. More landfill.
At Critical., we’re flipping the script with Cleanstone—100% recycled plastic tabletops that are built to last a lifetime - because;
✅ Zero laminate layers = No peeling, no swelling, no chipping.
✅ 100% waterproof = No mold, no warping, just durability.
✅ Graffiti-resistant = Tag it? Spray alcohol and wipe it clean.
✅ Virtually indestructible = Smash it with a hammer, leave it outside, drop it in a pool—it’s all good.
And the best part? Schools like James Cook, Manurewa High, and Kaitao Intermediate are already making the switch. Instead of sending entire desks to landfill, they’re simply replacing the tabletops with Cleanstone—saving money, reducing waste, and giving students durable, modern workspaces that tell a story about their commitment to sustainability.
Imagine if every school in Aotearoa did this. We’d keep 165,000 desks out of landfill every 10 years and avoid thousands of tonnes of emissions.
Schools, let’s stop throwing money at short-term fixes. Let’s invest in solutions that last.
