When fitting out your whare, office or store how do you like your materials finished: slightly rough and textured or highly polished? I'd love to hear what you think in the comments below. Rustic or Refined?
Here is an example of our 'Piha' Cleanstone (made from 100% recycled post consumer plastic packaging) in 2 finishes as part of an Aspect Furniture table top. One on the left is deliberately rough sanded and exposed while the one on the right is highly polished.
But what does the rest of the world think? I did some research and below are 5 interior finishes trends for 2024 and beyond:
1. Binary is Boring: Embrace a Spectrum of Textures (46% prefer natural materials)
A diverse mix of textures and finishes will paint the future, creating unique visual narratives like combining the warmth of reclaimed wood with the polished allure of concrete, or the rough-hewn beauty of natural stone contrasting with smooth metal details. Embrace the spectrum, not the extremes.
2. Biophilia is the New Black
Expect a surge in organic textures and materials like wood, stone, and even living walls (Interface study, 2022). Shoutout to GreenAir for their epic mahi in this space before it was cool! These elements foster well-being and inject calm into our spaces.
3. Imperfection is the New Perfection: Wabi-Sabi Takes Hold (WGSN Global Trend Report, 2023-24)
I posted about this last year but it seems like it's where the world is headed. Designers and users are celebrate the beauty of natural variations, subtle flaws, and a touch of rawness. Let textures tell their unique stories instead of screaming for perfection. This authenticity adds depth and personality, making spaces unforgettable.
4. Circular Economy in Action: Upcycled & Recycled Take Center Stage (73% believe sustainable materials are key)
Sustainability is no longer a trend, it's a mandate. I know I sound like a broken record here but I'm genuinely excited about this shift. Reclaimed wood, repurposed fabrics, and innovative recycled materials like Critical Cleanstone. These finishes offer stunning aesthetics with a lower environmental footprint, aligning with consumer values and future-proofing your projects.
5. Personalised Finishes: Micro-Customisation is King
Expect finishes that cater to individual tastes and brand identities. Think bespoke textures, and modular systems allowing for interchangeable finishes (shout out to Spacebar Design). Let spaces reflect unique personalities and brand narratives. We can help with created branded Cleanstone.
So what's cool, Rustic or Refined? Well, research tells us that the future lie not in the extremities but somewhere in between! But, personally, I'm a fan of rustic. I'm extremely lazy and don't like maintenance, so I prefer materials that age well over time. The rustic Cleanstone finish is what I'd go for!
Shoutout to Ashley for the rustic Piha Cleanstone photo and finish! The team at Aspect Furniture are doing some incredible work in this space.
