Sustainable Event Design NZ: What the Kia Pavilion Teaches Us About Temporary Spaces Without Permanent Waste

A thought for anyone designing pavilions, activations, hospitality suites, or pop-ups this year:

If the space is temporary, the waste shouldn’t be permanent.

I still think that’s one of the strangest things our industry accepts as normal.

We’ll spend serious money designing a beautiful short-life experience…
then build it out of materials that were never designed for a circular life after the event.

That’s why I rate this Kia Australia Pty Ltd Pavilion by Frank Wild

Not just because it looks good. Because it points to a better standard.

Kia’s Pavilion at Melbourne Park was designed as part Kia’s hospitality presence around the Australian Open, with reused elements from previous years paired with more eco-friendly materials.

One of my favourite details is the bar surround using backlit Clear Cleanstone made from 100% recycled soft plastics.

And that’s the bit I think more people in brand, events, and interiors should sit with:

temporary doesn’t need to mean throwaway.

A space can still feel premium. Still feel warm. Still feel considered. Still do the job beautifully.

But the material choices can be smarter.

To me, that’s where circular materials should be winning first. Not only in permanent architecture.

Also in the spaces we build for campaigns, launches, hospitality, and brand experience.

Massive respect to Frank Wild and Kia Australia for helping show what that can look like.

Worth passing on to anyone still specifying short-life spaces the old way.
