Building a Greener Future: How Aotearoa’s First Changing Sheds Are Transforming Recycled Plastics into Stunning Sustainable Design

Imagine building with materials made entirely from recycled fishing nets and soft plastics. 🌊 See how Aotearoa’s first changing sheds are setting a new standard for sustainable design.

Pac Studio and Auckland Council are creating Aotearoa's first ever changing sheds using a custom Critical. Cleanstone blend made using 100% recycled fishing nets, soft plastics and recycled plastic packaging they specified. This then paired beautifully with crimson stained sustainable timbers from Abodo Wood Ltd.

I caught up with Ben from New Wave Construction during the build to watch it get put together and the work in progress results are stunning.

Here are 3 reasons why using 100% recycled plastics could level up your next building project:

💚 Ease of Use: Critical. Cleanstone cuts, finishes, and fixes almost like timber, making it an easy swap in your existing workflows—thought it has it's own unique characteristics, you can use Cleanstone without special tools or big learning curves.

🗻 Exceptional Durability: Critical. Cleanstone won’t degrade in outdoor conditions. It's waterproof, UV-resistant, and designed to last a lifetime, giving your projects a longer lifecycle and reducing the need for replacements.

💪 Flexible Applications: Whether used for interior/ exterior applications, or high-traffic areas, Critical. Cleanstone offers design flexibility that lets creativity flourish without compromising on sustainability.

🔗 I run a green materials company called Critical. and we help designers and founders create beautiful spaces using 100% recycled plastic panels called Cleanstone. If your working on a project looking for sustainable materials, send me a DM or visit criticaldesign.nz - I'd love to help!

Stay tuned for part 2 and 3 of this mini series as well follow this project from build to completion!
