Never thought I’d be into bathrooms, but thanks to Alexander from Designwell, I’m now obsessed. Fonterra Hamilton’s head office fit out is both celebration of the Waikato region and sustainability.
Here’s a teaser video - full project walkthrough coming soon!
Designed by Designwell in partnership with Chow:Hill Architects I’m really excited to see Critical.’s Forest Cleanstone paired with the beautiful warm tones of timber and deep hues of stone in every Fonterra bathroom on this floor. Ātaahua!
Made from 100% recycled plastic fishing nets and soft plastics, nothing else - this simple little fit out moment helped to avoid over 1000x the carbon emissions compared to traditional solid surfaces while diverting plastics from landfill.
Here’s how Cleanstone was finished in the project:
1. Critical.’s Forest Cleanstone was cut to shape on the cnc. Post a rough and finishing pass, the edges was quickly sanded and flamed to bring back the shine.
2. The surface finish was also flamed, by gently kissing the surface with a wide flame to minimised heat build up in the panel.
3. The result is a slightly hardened exposed surface with textured “vein” finish like material stone.
4. Basin is then undermined with mechanical fixtures with the edge sealed with silicone. Absolutely stunning.
I love how the green from the finish nets and the translucency of the soft plastics gently glows and appears natural!
I run a green building materials company called Critical. And we help designers and brands create beautiful spaces that make our mokopuna proud. If your working on a Greenstar or Living Building Challenge project, send me a DM or reach out through our website below!
